Specialization Series – Why Being An Expert Is Important

Being an expert in your industry is vitally important. During the past several years the greater cultural mindset has shifted very strongly toward valuing specialization. Doctors and attorneys have been specializing for decades, and now folks in any industry are discovering that they have to specialize too, or risk going out of business.

Used to, there was a lot of value in being a generalist, and people looked for “turnkey” solutions from one source. They needed generalists to help them figure out what they needed, then found it easier to stick with that generalist for all their work. Now-a-days in the age of the internet, with any conceivable information at our fingertips 24 hours a day, things are different. People have become very proactive and self-service oriented. We research everything! (more…)

The Specialization Series – Why I’m Writing This

This entry is the first in a series of posts I want to write about specialization. Many things have happened recently to make me think about my business – what I like about how my business is going, and things that have happened in the past that I’d love to avoid in the future. As I’ve thought through these things I began to realize that it all comes down to specialization.

If I reflect back on the web design projects I’ve done that I am truly happy with, that have had the most positive impact on clients, they are projects that revolve around my area of expertise. When I work with a client from my top skill sets, in my areas of highest expertise, they are extremely happy with the outcome and I am extremely happy throughout the process. When I try to take on things that are outside my core areas, we all end up frustrated. (more…)

Small business owners, what do you stand for?

If you’re a small business owner and you haven’t read any of Michael Port’s books, shame on you! He’s got terrific insight to stimulate and motivate you. Unlike many other books about marketing, his ideas are actionable, rubber meets the road doable. I love that! I hate hate hate books on marketing theory, most of what’s in them is tired old advise that I get the feeling the author heard in business school but has never made a dime with. Not so with Michael’s books. You should check them out. But before you go and do that, get a feel for where’s he’s coming from in this video. Enjoy!

Recent website for New York law firm

I recently completed and launched a brand new website for the Gravett & Gravett law firm in Westchester County, NY. This was the second project I’ve completed for the firm and they are an absolute pleasure to work with. The whole site, including the blog, is powered by WordPress, which means that the firm can easily manage their content, even adding new pages, whenever they like. They also wanted a blog, and powering the entire site with WordPress means that they only have content management system to learn and work with.

Please visit their new site, and if you live in the Westchester area and have any need for a Family Lawyer, do contact Margaretha and Willem Gravett. They are pros that will take care of you exceptionally well.

If you need a new website, or need a current site revamped, contact me for a free no-obligation consultation and quote by phone at 404-380-1688 or complete the short form now.

Obama destroys Twitter?

Yesterday, the day after our historic Presidential election, Twitter reported it’s largest spike in use ever. Twitter, along with Digg, YouTube, and the LA Times website all reported record breaking user numbers yesterday. Twitter’s usage rate was actually 2-3 times higher than it’s previous record user rate!

One thing I’ve enjoyed about watching Obama’s campaign has been how he uses the internet. (more…)

Why web design is only one part of building a website

I love Aaron Wall’s blog on SEO, and today I was catching up on some of his recent posts and found this gem entitled “Why Web Design Matters”.  This is an excellent article for web designers certainly, but I think it’s most crucial for people who are about to get a new website, or a website redesign, or who are considering hiring a web designer in the future.

Most people rely heavily on their website designer or developer to structure their site and steer the course on visual appearance and navigation (content). I totally understand this, since more people find it intimating, and also realize that their time is best spent on their business. That’s why they hire an expert, right?

Yes…

or maybe no. (more…)
